Breaking Barriers International

ABOUT US

OUR FOUNDER

My purpose since I was a little girl has always centered around children. I babysat in middle school and volunteered through schools or agencies like the YMCA, Girl Scouts, and Special Olympics. Life often guides your steps from the people around you as well. My mother taught children with special needs and my father taught boxing to children on the streets of Chicago. I became a foster parent in college and received her first baby the week she graduated from undergrad. After decades of working as a school worker in school districts and state agencies and working with thousands of children–many who still keep in touch, I decided to create an organization that focused on the children who need the most support. There is a saying “The kid who gives you the most trouble is usually the one with the saddest story to tell.” Focusing on those children is crucial because it helps to ensure that the most vulnerable members of society are not left behind. A community can only be as strong as its weakest citizens, and neglecting those who are struggling can have far-reaching consequences. By focusing on them, we can identify, address, and advocate against the root causes of poverty, violence, and trauma. When we support those who are most in need, it is also in our collective interest, as it helps to build a stronger and more resilient community.
The concept of Breaking Barriers International for children is essential to unlocking the full potential of every child. Children often face a range of barriers, including those that are physical, social, or emotional, that can limit their ability to grow and flourish. When we work to break down these barriers, we create an environment where every child can participate fully and benefit from all that life has to offer. Breaking Barriers International aims to provide access to essential resources, such as referrals to healthcare and nutrition to survive; and education and emotional support, and positive opportunities to thrive. By creating inclusive and supportive environments for children, we can empower them to realize their full potential and contribute to their communities in meaningful ways. Ultimately, breaking barriers for children is not just important for the well-being of individual children, but also for the future of our society as a whole.

OUR MISSION

Breaking Barriers International is an organization that works to uplift children in urban and impoverished areas who have experienced trauma or violence or live amongst it. We aim to support children impacted by trauma and violence while identifying the root causes and bringing awareness of their experiences and environments to others for greater understanding. We provide safe spaces and opportunities for children to heal, grow, and be exposed to new and positive experiences, and allow children to explore their untapped potential. The butterfly symbolizes transformation, hope, power of positive change, and the beginning of new life–a goal for all of our children.
